Just like dating, there will be clients in your service-based business who are committed to working for the long haul and those who aren’t. It is essential to look out for these two types since to grow a sustainable services business; you need quality clients. I sometimes call them ‘Bread and Butter’ clients.

Quickie, ‘Drive-By,’ or Fling Clients

These are the business equivalent of a fling at best or a one-night stand at worst. Bad clients can be identified by the following qualities:

  • They are flaky
  • They are idealists
  • They have unrealistic expectations
  • They are looking for a one-sided relationship: you do all the work while they sit back and criticize
  • There is very little communication with them between meetings or work sessions.
  • They never stop shopping around and are constantly looking for new service providers, asking others, or even hiring multiple people at the same time.
  • They expect immediate results, regardless of where they are at…
