What does a good employee, vendor, or client look like?

After 20 years in business, I have seen it all and have quite a bit to say on this topic. Here are the criteria I look for. By the way, these criteria is universal so no matter if you are looking to hire a stellar service provider, freelancer, or employee, you may appreciate the same qualities. These are the five qualities I look for in people:

1/ Self-Discipline: Either “All In” or “Liar”

The worst type of client or hire is a flaky, wishy-washy one. A self-disciplined person can manage their time, is organized, and follows through. No laziness here. How do you vet them? The best way I have found to ensure you get motivation is by price. Unless you get extremely lucky, most often you get what you pay for so higher rates attract higher quality people. While there are exceptions, the lower the rates, the easier it is to attract “wishy-washy” people. When people pay good money, they usually want to get their return on investment, and people who are good at their work demand higher rates.
