Deep down, everyone wants to be king (or close to one).

We love our pop culture, our idols, our sportsmen, and our own level of fame, even if it is just getting more social ‘likes’ than usual.

While nearly everyone chases the latest ‘hack’ to the top, a few are quietly achieving a much deeper, more lasting influence that the popular crowd will never have.

When I think back to my high school days, I remember the popular kids. They had the specific and narrowly defined qualities that earned them their popularity in the first place: looks, abilities, money, or a charismatic personality. But where are they today? Mostly forgotten. Looks have faded. Their abilities that used to impress are now old news. Who wants to be a ‘has been’ or a ‘one-hit wonder?’ Sad, really, but predictable because popularity doesn’t last.

It feels great to be popular, but it isn’t a good goal to pursue, nor do I believe it is a good use of your time to devote too much of your time to following them.

Popularity is overrated, based on little substance, and fades quickly.
