The 4th of July is Sad This Year

Why I’m Not Feeling That Festive

I’ve always loved the 4th of July. Seriously, it is one of my favorite holidays. I’ve always been a patriot. I truly believe with all my heart that USA is one of the best countries in the world. I’m a diehard. Love us or hate us, Americans have many of the things I desire most in my life: freedom of expression, a beautiful and diverse country, a prosperous economy, friendly and helpful people, and some of the best of everything in the world, since the 1% in all industries seem to flock to America.

Yet….

This year feels different; sad and disappointing.

There have been 200 mass shootings in only the first half of 2022. Then the Supreme Court revoked women’s rights to have a safe abortion protected by the Constitution.

Today I feel more like mourning than celebrating.

Because recent events have left my country more torn than whole.

COVID left us fragile, confused, and complaisant. I lost my dad, swiftly and unexpectedly, then was told to stay home, wear a mask, and get vaccinated.

Then I thought we could see the light at the end of the tunnel when gun violence hit.
