Wild Women

Ode to my ancestors

Inside of me, I feel them

I am not alone

The spirits of my female ancestors

They are with me

They call to me

Cheering me on

Filling me with strength

The fire burns inside of me

But this fire is not mine

I am a descendant of wild women

Viking women

Red-haired women with eyes the color of the winter sky

Women who knew no fear

Who took charge

Who did the necessary to make ends meet

Who saved their tears

Because no one had time for that

There were chores to do and children, men, and animals to feed

My women were badasses

Tough as nails

Survivors to the core

They went through so much

Men gone to war

Farming and hunting needed to be done

Small women who somehow moved the plow or shot an arrow
